Airplane Mode – Put your phone in Airplane mode. This turns off your cellular and wifi radios. GPS still works.
Limit GPS Usage – Topo Maps+ already uses a power optimized GPS mode, but constantly requesting location does have an effect on battery. Turn off other apps that might be using it as well by going into the Settings app and selecting Privacy ->Location Services and change all services to “Never” and only leave on the few apps you want to have access to GPS. I only leave on the Camera (I want my photos to be GPS tagged) and Topo Maps+.
“While Using” Permission – In the above Location Services change all services to “While Using”
Don’t Record your trip – Use Progress On Trail instead. You can still use that to see your trail data. Or, take photos along the way to leave a “breadcrumb” trail that you can see with the photo overlay.
Limit App Usage – You really shouldn’t be playing games anyways.
Screen Brightness – Turn it down as low as possible.
Start with 100% Battery – Keep it plugged in on the drive if you need it for getting to the trail.
Power Off At Night – Keep it warm in your sleeping bag as well if you expect colder temps.
Low Power Mode – Even at 100% life you can save power by going into Settings and selecting Battery, then Low Power Mode.
Raise to Wake – In iPhone settings under “Display and Brightness”, turn off “Raise to Wake” so your screen doesn’t keep turning on every time you lift the phone.
